so um... yeah
Wow, ok... well if anyone read my dangerously long last post from about 2 weeks ago that claimed I'd make another post soon after to finish the story i was working with... this is not that post. That moment came and went and instead of writing things down all night I decided to experience life and go out and do / see things.
But, seeing how at this point we are all on our own little adventures and everyone else has made some kind of post, I figure I'll take a bit of time and update my fans on my whereabouts and whatnot. So last time I posted I think that we were actually still in Spain at the tail end of portion one of our journey. Once we left Spain we've been traveling all over the place and having a blast (another reason for the lack of updates). Anyway, we stayed with Aaron's family in Germany for a couple of days which was awesome. We got some killer Mexican (new Mexican) food and had mac and cheese. From there it was off to Berlin and the love parade.
Wow, as I write this I'm beginning to realize how much I really don't have the patients to do this right now but I'll struggle on by writing a few crazy observations about Europe and maybe throw in a bit of update stuff at the same time but probably not much.
Ok so the love parade was was crazy. It was a festival centered around techno music, crazy people and of course love. I can honestly say I've seen more PDA and even public sex in the last month of my travels than in my entire life. Europe in general is full of sex. In Spain after maybe 9 or 10 you turn the tv on and there is full out hardcore porn on network tv. On the beaches it is very common for young girls to get a full out tan by laying out with no top. People make out out and grope each other everywhere and when it comes to these crazy festivals it is even really common to see people getting it on in the corner, under the tree, on the bench, or in extreme cases... even on the wall that hundreds of people have pissed on over the previous hours.
The dogs all have balls. Well at least the male versions. On top of this the dogs are everywhere in europe. They're on the metros, in the streets, in restaurants, and in stores... and that's if the dogs are leashed up. Most of the time (at least in spain) people just let their dogs run around everywhere, which also leads up to an incredible amount of dog crap all over the place.
I'm a sweater, especially when it's humid out. And lately (until i arrived in France) Europe has been the most ridiculously humid and hot place in the world (or so it seems to me). The only real thing that I miss about the states is the greatness of air conditioning. I don't car how hot it is in the states the feeling of coldness at night and not waking up in a sweat is great. I know it will probably be worse when we get down to South East Asia, but I figure these civilizations have been industrialized and modernized for years... they have plasma tvs in all of their bars and all kinds of other technological advances that completely surpass many of the things we have in the states... but for some reason they have something against being cold...
Ok, well i forgot some of my other observations... i'll have to start writing them down. Now for a quick update of my whereabouts the last week.
So as Aaron said we did the A-dam thing and that was cool. Nothing like sleeping in a small camper with a friend in a bed with hearts all over it. Anyway, it was actually pretty relaxing. It reminded me a lot of the states and camping ingeneral.
So after that we went to Brussels, which was kind of disappointing as a city, but as he said we met some cool people which made it fun. Then I split off from Aaron and headed for the Normandy city of Bayeux. The plan at the time was to take the train to Paris and immediately jump on the train to Bayeux because I'd been to Paris and I'd heard that there really aren't hostels in Paris (which would make it very expensive). Anyway, this is actually what I did.
So Bayeux is actually a very touristy city. However, because it is a city that had a lot of WWII things, most of the tourists are very old. Luckily I did meet some really cool guys at the hostel that I stayed at and had a fantastic time there. During the day I took a bus out and saw Omaha beach (major US landing point), pointe du hoc (Nazi stronghold that still has bunker ruins everywhere), the US and British cemeteries, and a couple of musemes. It was very interesting and really good to see. It's hard to imagine what how much blood was shed on the beaches and all over that area. It's kind of weird thinking that these beaches are now kind of a resort kind of thing with people laying out and having a good time all over.
Anyway, other than that I saw some cool things in the city of Bayeux as well. They have these tapestries there from the 11th century or something like that that depicts the battle of hasting (i think). Anyway, it's the battle where the King of England took control of Northern France. It was pretty interesting I guess, but tapestries are tapestries. I also saw the Notre Dame Cathedral there (I think there are at least 4 in France) and it was a pretty church I guess. At this point it's all about the outside of the churches because the insides are practically the same everywhere. At the time I figured that this church was pretty big or even about the same size as the one in Paris (I'd seen the one in Paris once when I was like 14 or something). Anyway, after a few days of Bayeux I decided I'd had enough of the small town life and headed off to the main attraction in France, Paris.
I'm going to post this now and then come back here shortly (maybe) and finish up the story. so um... yup.
